Meanwhile in the Market
Opens Thursday 4th June 2026
Meanwhile in the Market is a series of photographic portraits of current Eastgate Indoor Market traders, located on the first floor of the Eastgate Shopping Centre. Co-created by GASP!, Emilie Sandy & Karl Marsden (Sama Creatives) and the traders themselves, the portraits aim to raise the profile of the market and support the traders during the Greyfriars development and forthcoming relocation.
Eastgate Market opened in 1868 before moving into its current, purpose-built location in 1968 as part of a major city redevelopment, which included the opening of the shopping centre in 1973. It will relocate again in 2027.
The project came about following a conversation with market trader supporter and advocate Viva O’Flynn who wanted to find a way to raise the profile of the market during a time of change.
